Trip Overview

The Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) runs across the length of Nepal from east to west through the high passes of the Himalayan range. The GHT covers a distance of 1700KM, divided into 10 sections and encompassing the different ethnic groups of this colourful, diverse country. The GHT trail in the far North West of Nepal, Simikot to Hilsa in Humla is the final part of the GHT trail. We feel proud to have been born and brought up in this region. As a native of this area it enables us to operate safe treks and give firsthand experience of the culture and people of the Humla region.

This is a tough but rewarding climb through cloud forests and into alpine territory. You’ll gain significant altitude today, passing mossy trails, stone staircases, and yak grazing pastures. Day 35: Yangle Kharka – Langmale Kharka (4,410m)

Today’s walk climbs steadily alongside the river, gradually taking you above the treeline into an expansive alpine landscape. Dwarf rhododendrons and junipers dot the ground, while massive peaks loom above. You’ll pass through yak pastures and Buddhist chortens before reaching Langmale Kharka, a peaceful meadow surrounded by towering mountains. The elevation gain is significant, so you’ll rest early to aid acclimatization.

The landscape is harsh yet beautiful—ice, rock, and wind-swept silence. This is one of the least visited 8000-meter base camps, offering a rare sense of solitude and awe. Acclimatization is essential here before continuing over the high passes ahead.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Trek Time: Optional hikes (2–4 hours)

Accommodation: Tented camp or basic shelter

Day 38: Makalu Base Camp – Langmale Kharka (4,410m)

You retrace your steps through the rugged terrain back to Langmale, with changing light making the mountains appear even more dramatic. This day feels mystical, partly due to the wind that seems to chant its own mantra and partly due to the near-lunar landscapes. Yara village, your stop for the night, is built into the cliffs, offering a bird’s-eye view of dry riverbeds and layered ridges.
