Trip overview

Putha Hiunchuli is a beautiful peak in the wonderful and mysterious Dolpo region. This wornderful mountain stands in Nepal’s northwestern region. As part of the Dhaulagiri Himalayan Ranges, it is between the massifs of Dhaulagiri and Kanjiroba Himal. Dhaulagiri VI is another name for it. The Putha Hiunchuli is a unique and lonesome mountain which is rarely climbed.

In comparison to other technical mountain excursions, this peak has fewer technical obstacles. However, for the Putha Hiunchuli Expedition, good physical condition and previous peak climbing expertise are highly advised. In 1954, Jimmy Roberts and a British Expedition team became the first to reach the summit of Mt. Putha Hiunchuli. The Putha Hiunchuli Expedition is a fantastic opportunity for experienced climbers to explore the lesser-known Dolpo region while getting a once-in-a-lifetime experience of reaching the top of Mt. Putha Hiunchuli.

We’ll take a short flight to Nepalgunj, a southern town city in western Nepal, after a full day of touring in Kathmandu. We’ll take another spectacular flight from Nepalgunj to Jhuphal in the lower Dolpo. Then we will begin our trip by following the trail to Dunai, which takes us past cultural communities and highly forested areas. Lower Dolpo’s administrative and commerce centers are both located in Dunai. We continue on the path for a few days, passing through Tarakot, Musikhola, Kakot, and Phedi villages on our way to Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp.

Our Sherpa crew will inspect our climbing equipment and health status as soon as we arrive at base camp. Our experienced climbing professionals gave the directions and we started towards the summit of Mount Putha Hiunchuli, fully equipped and acclimatized. Our strenuous ascent to the summit is rewarded with beautiful views of the Dolpo region’s valleys and high peaks.

Roped-up glacier climbing including crevasse crossings is part of the Mt. Putha Hiunchuli Expedition. The snow slopes reach a maximum of 40 degrees. On the tougher areas of the climb, fixed ropes will be used, however most of the climbing will be done in roped teams. Despite the fact that our Sherpa team will set up camps on the mountain and transport food and fuel, we expect our team members to bring their own equipment. The climbing session will last two weeks, giving you plenty of time to acclimate and prepare for the peak. Above base camp, we plan to use three camps: Camp 1 at 5,400 meters, Camp 2 at 6,200 meters and Camp 3 at 6,600 meters.

02 Day

Sightseeing around Kathmandu as well as climbing preparations

We’ll spend the day sightseeing in Kathmandu’s valley, visiting some of the city’s most beautiful world heritage monuments. We will also finish all of the essential paper work and other preparations for the Putha Hiunchuli Expedition today.

03 Day

Flight from Kathmandu – Nepalgunj

We are taking a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj today. You will be transported to the hotel after arriving in Nepalgunj. We’ll go to the sacred Bageshwari Temple and spend some time walking through the bustling market ‘bazaar.’ People from all corners of Nepal, as well as Tibet and India, can be seen here. They come here to trade products and services.

04 Day

Flight from Nepalgunj – Jhuphal then trek to Dunai

We will get up early to catch a morning flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal’s dirt airstrip. We will gather our belongings after arriving safely at Juphal airport and begin trekking on a wide track that descends through magnificent terraced fields. Before crossing the Thuli Bheri Khola, our trail passes through a small clump of buildings (river). After crossing the river, we continue our journey on a wide dirt road that leads us to Dunai, where we will spend the night. Dunai serves as the administrative and economic center for the whole Dolpo Region.

05 Day

Trek from Dunai - Tarakot

We will leave Dunai after breakfast and continue the trail along the Thuli Bheri river to Tarakot. We’ll walk on a wide track with some gentler stretches. It is a historic fortified town that was erected by the locals as a Dzong (fortress). Our staff will set the camp and make preparations for additional trekking once we get at the campsite.

06 Day

Trek from Tarakot – Musikhola

We will leave Tarakot and follow the trail that runs along the river’s right bank. Our trek will continue with spectacular views of adjacent valleys and canyons. We will arrive at Musi Khola for our overnight camping after a few hours of trekking from Lesicap. Our campsite will be nestled in the woods, with a few scattered homesteads.

07 Day

Trek from Musikhola – Kakot

As we trek towards Kakot from Musikhola, our trail becomes more difficult. After some walking, the trail comes to a bridge that spans the river’s narrowest section. Soon, we’ll be on our way to Kakot, following a vast pathway and path carved into the rock and built on a magnificent descending stairway engineered by the locals.

08 Day

Trek from Kakot – German Base Camp

We’ll leave Kakot on a rising track that leads to the base camp, which is separated from the rest of the world by deep, impassable ravines that can only be reached by crossing two high altitude passes. We’ll take the trail that leads to the 4,160-meter crossing of the first pass. From there, we’ll continue our trek to 4,400 meters, where we’ll set up camp near German Base Camp. As soon as we get at the area, our crew will begin setting up camp. Resting after a hard day of trekking will be well worth it.

09 Day

Trek from German Base Camp – Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp

After breakfast, we will depart German Base Camp and ascend the steep trail to the second and much more difficult pass. Although the climbing of Putha Hiunchuli is believed to be less technical, the ascent trail to the base camp is thought to be much more challenging. Walking at a higher altitude can be exhausting, so taking a break now and then can help you regain the stamina you need to continue trekking. At 4,915 meters, our base camp will be located on a moraine plateau. For climbing Putha Hiunchuli, our team will make the necessary preparations.

We are rewarded with stunning views of the Dolpo region’s high valleys and peaks as we reach the summit. We’ll spend a brief amount of time at the peak before returning to base camp using the same method.

Trek from Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp – German Base Camp

We’ll take a leisurely start and prepare for the return journey now that we’ve reached our goal – the peak of Putha Hiunchuli. After cleaning up the base camp, we’ll follow the same trail back to our campground at German Base Camp, which includes crossing a pass. On our journey back, we’ll soak in the stunning scenery of the Dolpo region.

30 Day

Trek from German Base Camp – Kakot

We will collect our belongings and leave our camp at the German Base Camp after breakfast. We will begin to retrace our steps in preparation for another pass crossing. After crossing the pass, our trail descends to Kakot, where we will camp for the night.

31 Day

Trek from Kakot – Dunai

We will retrace our steps back to Kakot on the same track that passes through Musi Khola. As we hike all the way back to Dunai for our overnight stay, our trail will pass through Tarakot. Today will be a long but enjoyable day of hiking. At Dunai, we’ll celebrate the evening with the entire climbing crew.

32 Day

Trek from Dunai – Jhuphal

After breakfast in Dunai, we’ll have a leisurely start on a broad track that passes the Thulo Bheri River before ascending through terraced farmlands to Jhuphal, where our journey formally finishes.
