Trip overview

Karnali River Rafting takes you into one of Asia’s last great undammed rivers, a raw, powerful waterway carving through the remote wilderness of far-western Nepal, etching deep gorges and dense jungle corridors that few travellers ever witness. Often likened to the Grand Canyon of Asia for the scale of its canyon walls and the intensity it delivers, this is not just a rafting trip. It is a full expedition into one of Nepal’s most extraordinary and least-explored landscapes.

Over the course of this 11-day journey, Firante Treks brings you into the heart of this wild river. You will paddle through Class III to V whitewater, pass beneath towering canyon cliffs, drift through jungle-lined corridors alive with birdlife, and camp on remote riverbanks under skies filled with stars. Each day on the water is different, from heart-pounding rapids to long, meditative floats where the jungle closes in and time seems to slow.

This is an adventure balanced with comfort. Warm, freshly cooked meals by the campfire. Experienced International Rafting Federation-certified guides who know this river intimately. Safety kayakers in position on every major rapid. And at the end of it all, a farewell dinner in Kathmandu, massage tables, music, and memories that stay with you.

The Karnali is still wild. Firante Treks will take you there properly.

Fly Kathmandu to Nepalgunj – Drive to Karnali River Camp

An early morning domestic flight takes you from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, one of the most scenic mountain flights in Nepal, with views across ridges, deep gorges, and the distant Himalayan horizon. The flight takes approximately 45 minutes and is a journey in itself.

On arrival in Nepalgunj, the team transfers to a private vehicle for the 5-hour overland drive through the lowland terai toward our put-in point on the Karnali. You will meet the full river crew, load the gear, and sleep tonight under a million stars on the riverbank. Welcome to Karnali country.

Route Highlights: Domestic mountain flight, terai lowlands, first riverside camp

Temple Walk & River Launch

Wake up to the sound of the river and the smell of camp breakfast. After a short walk to a nearby riverside temple, a quiet moment to toss a coin for good luck, and take in the surroundings, the crew preps the rafts and safety equipment for final checks.

We launch mid-morning and float into the jungle-lined corridor of the upper Karnali. The river begins to reveal itself: clear turquoise water, towering canyon walls, dense green jungle pressing in from both sides. Camp tonight is wherever the river tells us to stop. The expedition has officially begun.

Karnali River Rafting – Whitewater Warm-Up Through Jungle Valley

Birdsong and river mist greet the morning as the jungle wakes around you. Today brings punchy Class III to IV rapids designed to shake off the rust and get the team paddling as one unit. You begin to feel paddle synchrony develop, quick commands, clean lines, and shared stoke.

Between rapids, the river slows and the jungle presses in. You may spot river eagles overhead, hear the call of exotic birds, or catch a glimpse of a langur monkey in the canopy above. By evening, the crew is clicking, and the camp mood is high.

Rapid Grade: Class III–IV

Highlights: Deep canyon scenery, wave trains, sandbar camping

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Karnali River – Major Whitewater Rapids Day

This is the day the Karnali is known for. Everything the team has built over the past three days — paddle technique, communication, trust, timing comes together on the water today. We face the big-name rapids that define the Karnali’s whitewater legacy.

God’s House. Juicer. Flip and Strip. These are not just rapids; they are rites of passage. Your guides will scout each one carefully, position safety kayakers, and walk the team through the plan. Then you paddle. Hard, together, as one crew. You will arrive at camp tonight tired, proud, and changed.

Rapid Grade: Class IV–V

Highlights: God’s House, Juicer, and other legendary Class V rapids

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Riverside camping

Karnali River – Scenic Rafting Through Remote Wilderness

The river breathes out today. After the intensity of Day 5, the Karnali rewards you with long, scenic floats broken by occasional surprises. The canyon walls begin to widen, and the river gives you glimpses of a broader landscape: fishermen on distant banks, children waving from hidden jungle paths, dense forest still closing in tight on either side.

It is a well-earned chill day on the water. Let your body breathe, your mind wander, and the river carry you. These are often the stretches people remember most: the silence between rapids, the colour of the water, the feeling of being genuinely far from the ordinary world.

Highlights: Scenic floats, remote communities, widening canyon views

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Riverside camping
08 Day

Karnali River Journey – Entering the Lower River Plains

Signs of the wider world begin to appear: larger villages on the banks, occasional bridges overhead, the river widening as it feels the pull of the plains below. But the jungle still hugs the water, and you are still very much out there, in it, with no road in sight.

One more night camping by the river. Make it count. Sit by the fire a little longer. Watch the stars. The expedition is nearing its final chapter on the water.

Highlights: Transition landscape, riverside communities, final deep-jungle camping

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Riverside camping
09 Day

Rafting Ends at Chisapani – Begin Return Journey

The mighty Karnali spills out onto the plains, and the river widens dramatically as we approach Chisapani Bridge. This is our take-out point: the boats come out of the water for the last time, the paddle is set down, and the Karnali Expedition is officially complete.

From Chisapani, you have two options: fly or drive back to Kathmandu, or extend your adventure with an optional jungle safari in nearby Bardia National Park and one of Nepal’s premier wildlife reserves and home to tigers, rhinos, and wild elephants. Either way, you will be back in town by the following day for a long-overdue hot shower.

Highlights: Chisapani take-out, optional Bardia safari, transition to civilization

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Accommodation: Hotel in Nepalgunj or Kathmandu (flight/drive dependent)

Farewell Celebration — Spa, Dinner & Last Night Together

You have earned this. After days of paddling, sleeping under the stars, and navigating some of Nepal’s most powerful whitewater, it is time to treat yourself. Kathmandu’s best massage therapists, spas, and hot showers are waiting. The city will feel loud, but your soul will be calm.

In the evening, the full crew comes together one last time for a farewell dinner, music, laughter, storytelling, and the kind of celebration that only happens when a group of people has been through something real together. The bonds forged on the Karnali are sealed for life.

Highlights: Spa reset, farewell dinner, team celebration

We look forward to seeing you on the water. See you downstream.

Why Firante Treks

For over two decades, Firante Treks has been building adventures that actually matter, based in Kathmandu, operating throughout Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and India, and rooted in a philosophy of quality over quantity. We keep groups small, guides local, and our commitment to your experience is absolute.

The Karnali is not a standard rafting product for us. It is our home territory. Our guides know this river intimately, every rapid, every eddy, every camp spot. Their skill comes not from a manual but from years of real field experience, reading water, weather, and group dynamics before situations ever develop.

We believe in honest communication, careful logistics, and being genuinely present with our guests every step of the way. No autopilot. No compromises. Just experience, intention, and deep respect for the river and the people who join us on it.
