Trip Overview

Island peak stands at 6189 m (20,305 ft). This trekking peak offer great potential for climbing and provide a challenging but achievable alternative to full scale mountaineering expeditions with a chance to stand on top of a Himalayan peak. 

Trekking peaks do vary in terms of difficulty from non-technical plods to very technical climbs. Island peak is mostly a plod up but does require the use of ice axe and crampons and there is one part where a rope is needed.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International airport of Kathmandu, our representative of Firante Treks and Expedition will be waiting you at the exit terminal. After meeting and greetings, they will transfer you to the respective hotel. Later in the evening, we will host you a welcome dinner in a fine Nepali restaurant which serves you authentic delectable Nepali cuisine.

Accommodation: 3 Star Hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 2: Kathmandu: Trip Preparation City Tour

Today is our trek / climbing prepration and discussion day. We will introduce you to our expert climbing guide (Sherpa) and other participants aswell. Our team leader will check all the climbing equipment. If you have any questions related to this expedition, you can discuss with our trip leader.

We will also visit some of the UNESCO enlisted world Heritage sites of Kathmandu namely - Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath temples.

After that, you can spend the day relaxing at your hotel as the next morning - we take a flight to Lukla. We will spend our night at Kathmandu.

Day 3: Fly to Lukla & Trek to Phakding (35 min flight, 3-4 Hrs Hike)

Today after breakfast - we will head to the airport and take a domestic mountain flight to Lukla. During the flight, one can get the picturesque view of the Himalayas including the mighty mountain Everest plus many other few snow-capped peaks. Enjoying approx 35 minutes flight time, we arrive at Tenzing/Hillary Lukla airport.

From here we begin our trek through flourishing village of Khumbu region heading towards Phakding. Today we will be trekking for few hours for proper acclimatization but if you are interested to hike more, then we can hike to the monastery nearby. We will spend our night in Phakding.

Day 4: Phakding to Namche Bazaar, 5-6 Hrs

Today after breakfast - we will be walking through dense exquisite pine forests following the Dudh Koshi river for for few hours  to reach Namche Bazaar. We will be hiking through some of the dense forest of pine, rhododendron, and juniper and in between also set some radiant views of Mount Thamserku (6608 meters).

In a clear sky - we also get the chance to witness the Everest. Continuing tour trek - we arrive at Sagarmatha national park and then reach Namche Bazaar - the main gateway to all trekking, expeditions of Everest region. We cross at least five suspension bridges and the last one will be the Hillary Bridge. We will spend our night in Namche Bazaar.

Day 5: Namche Bazaar - Acclimatization Day

Today we will be acclimatizing the altitude which is a must at higher altitudes. As recommed by health experts, the best way proper acclimatization is to hike. There are many options for proper acclimatization, such as wander around Namche Bazaar and get familiar with the Sherpa people, understand and explore their culture/ traditions and their lifestyles.

We can even hike to Everest view hotel to capture the Mount Everest up close. On the way, we will  visit a local museum showcasing the history of Everest region and varied flora and fauna of Everest region.

For adventurous trekkers, the other option will be hiking to Khumjung village approx 5-6 hours. In this village, you will be visiting Edmund Hillary School and Kumjung monastery famous abode where Yeti scalp is kept. We will spend our night in Namche.

Day 6: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche, 5-6 Hrs of Trek

Today after breakfast, we will trek to Tengboche. The trail from Namche towards Phuniki is easy but from here - it is a bit challenging. When you arrive at Punakha, we will be ascending to Tengboche village - a beautiful village popular for Tengboche monastery - the largest monastery of Everest region.

This monastery is situated between Sagarmatha National park - which is also listed in the UNESCO world heritage site. The monastery is surrounded by 360-degree views of the Himalayas including snow-capped peaks like Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Thamserku and Ama Dablam.

The Tengboche monastery opens at 3 pm and you might get to witness the religious practices of Buddishm. We will spend our night in Tengboche.

Day 7: Tengboche to Pheriche, 4-5 Hrs of Trek

From the monastery - one gets the mind-blowing view of the surrounding. So, we will be visiting this monastery also in the morning and spend some time taking pictures of mountains and landscapes. After that, we will descend for half an hour via lush forest and then cross the river.

We will then continue trekking uphill and climbing uphill - we will come across the Sherpa village and then arrive at Pheriche village situated close to the riverside. Here you can spot a helipad used for emergency rescue. We will even attend the class conducted by mountain expert related to mountain expedition. We will spend our night in Pheriche.

Day 8: Pheriche to Lobuche, 5-6 Hrs of Trek

Today after breakfast - we will continue our trek with an easy walk and head to Dugla. After that, we will be trekking up to the steep moraine of Khumbu glacier and pass via scatter boulder slopes and climb to Chupki Lhara where you find piled stones with Buddhists prayer flags - a memory to American mountaineer - Scott Fisher and Nepali Everest Mountain submitter - Babu Chiri Sherpa - who successfully climbed Mt Everest 10 times.

Continuing our trek to Khumbu glacier, we will be surrounded by several peaks view like Lingtren, Khumbutse, Mahalangur Himal, and Pumori. We will spend our night in Lobuche.

Day 9: Lobuche to Gorak Shep & visit Everest Base Camp. 6-7 Hrs of Trek

Today - we will be trekking on the trail that leads to Everest Base Camp via huge Gorak Shep Lake. Trekking straightly forward - we will reach Indian Army Mountaineers Memorial. The trails from here are very deceptive - so, we properly follow the path of the Sherpa guide.

The trek is a bit challenging as we will reach the high altitude and the thin air makes the trek tough. Slowly, we will continue our trek and pass the moraine, rocky dunes and river and then arrive at Everest Base Camp. The views you get to see from the EBC are Pumori, Nuptse, and Kumbutse. After that, we will retrace back to Gorak Shep for a good night sleep. We will spend our night in Gorakshep.

Day 10: GorakShep to KalaPatthar & back to Lobuche, 7-8 Hrs of Trek

Today in the early morning, we will be trekking to Kala Patthar and we should be well prepared for the cold temperature (10 to 14 Celsius) with strong cold winds. On the way - you will get to view several peaks like Khumbutse, Changtse, Lingtren and Mount Everest but the up-close views are via Kala Patthar. We will here get 360-degree close views of Everest and spend some time taking pictures of these spectacular mountains. After that, we will retrace back to Lobuche. We will spend our night in Lobuche.

Day 11: Lobuche to Kongma La & to Chhukung, 6-7 Hrs of Trek

Today after having our breakfast - we will continue our trek through Khumbu glacier towards Kongma La Base Camp at 5000 meters. After that, we will climb to Kongma La Pass which is quite a challenging pass. On the way to Kongma La Pass - we will be observing Buddhists prayer flags.

Next, we will descend steadily to the Imja river valley and again descend to Chhukung. Reaching Chhukhang - we will check our climbing gears. We will spend our night in Chhukhang.

Note: There are two routes to reach Chhukhang. If you don't want to undertake the challenging Kongma La Pass, then there is an option of trekking via Dingboche towards Chhukhang.

Day 12: Chhukung to Island Peak Base Camp, 3-4 Hrs of Trek

The trek towards Island Base Camp is a somewhat steep trail - where we will first ascend to the south and turn eastside to the valley. We will then trek through windy trail beneath southern edge of moraine from Lhotse glacier.

We will continue our trek on the enjoyable trail alongside the stream. The path to Amphu Labtsa lies in the south-east direction. A zigzag path via Imja and Lhotse glacier leads to broad valley contiguous to the south-west side of Island peaks.

We will spend our night at Island Peak Base Camp.

Day 13: Pre-Climb Training on Island Peak Base Camp

After breakfast - we will be training for climbing Island peak. Our climbing expert guide will be instructing you how to climb the mountain and use the climbing equipment like ice axe, crampons, climbing boots, harness, etc. The guide will be also teaching you how to use ropes while ascending and descending.

To summit this peak - previous climbing experience is not necessarily required as some training and confidence with the support of our climbing guide, one can easily reach the top summit the peak. Today we can hike to high camp and retrace back to base camp or one can take rest. We will spend our night in base camp.

Day 14: To Island Peak Summit (6189 m) & back to Base camp, 10-12 Hrs Trek

Today we will wake up early at 12 or 1 am and then after having breakfast start ascending the peak. We will reach the summit the peak before noon as in afternoon - the blowing of the strong winds makes it tough for summiting the peak. The path moves above the base camp more than hundred meters above.

Firstly the trail turns to a grassy trail to stone strewn. After that, we will ascend the rock ditch. It is not so tough, however, there is plenty of short rock steep to ascend until we reach the right side of the ditch. After that, the trails pursue ridgeline that leads to exciting and exposed cross on the snout of summit glacier.

Firante's expert guide will be fixing a rope when necessary. A steep snow slope leads us to the summit ridge. We will be using both the fixed ropes and man rope for safety. We will be using fixed rope after fruitfully ascending on the rock, the rope length will be 350 meters but the length of the rope depends on season and crevasses.

There are two newly shaped crevasses which are around 3 to 4 meter long. To cross the crevasses, we will be using a ladder. Reaching the top of the summit - we will enjoy the mountain views and spend some time taking pictures. We will then retrace back to Island Peak Base Camp and reaching the base camp - we will celebrate the successful completion of our peak summit.

Day 15: Island Peak Base Camp to Pangboche, 5-6 Hrs of Trek

Today our trekking trail will be comparatively easy as we will be descending down to low altitudes by retracing back on the same trail via the broad valley of Khumbu river and passing the stunning Sherpa village of Orsho and Shomare.

We can also trek via different route towards Pangboche where on the trail we can visit Gompa - an ancient Gomba of Khumbu region, or you can trek from the regular trail to Pangboche. This beautiful village is bounded by the north side of Everest and other peaks like Ama Dablam, Kangtaiga, Thamserku, the range of Kongde and Imja River.

Day 16: Pangboche to Namche Bazaar, 4-5 Hrs of Trek

We will continue our trek retracing down to Imja Khola and trek upwards to the lush forest towards Tengboche. Reaching the monastery - we will be visiting nuns and then have lunch at Tengboche. After that, we will be trekking to the hillside covered by thick juniper and rhododendron trees.

We will cross the Dudh Koshi River through a bridge and then descend through lush pine forests and arrive at Sansa. After passing pass lush forests and chorten - we will arrive at army base camp of Namche Bazaar. We will spend our night in Namche Bazaar.

Day 17: Namche Bazaar to Lukla, 6-7 Hrs of Trek

Today our trail descends down steeply - so we must walk carefully as our shaky- legs constantly battle the rocky trail. We will then cross the Dudh Koshi River through suspension bridge and from here our trail turns into a moderate level. Within a while - we will reach Lukla and then you can stretch your sore legs and relax.

We will spend our night in Lukla.

Day 18: Fly back to Kathmandu

Today early morning after breakfast - we take a scenic flight to Kathmandu and within 35-40 minutes, we will reach Kathmandu airport and next - drive you to the hotel. Later - you can do souvenir shopping or explore other places nearby. Our guide will be helping you with souvenir shopping and sightseeing. In the evening, Firante's team will host a farewell dinner to celebrate for completing successfully our Island Peak Climbing expedition. We will spend our night in Kathmandu.

Day 19: Final Departure

Today your adventurous journey to Everest Base Camp trek with Island peak climbing comes to an end. One of our representatives will drop you at the airport three hours earlier than your flight schedule.

 Firante Treks and Expedition Manages for best and comfortable accommodation and also provides you hygienic food. Standard (3 Star) are booked in the cities such as Kathmandu and Pokhara, whereas a tyical trek lodge will be booked on remote areas. 

Luxurious rooms from 5 Star hotels are also made avaiable on demand in the cities on additional cost but remote regionss dont have such facilities.
